Awards for 2012 HHB State Championships

The awards for the 2012 West VirginiaState Championships have arrived and I believe all participants will be quite happy with them.  As you know, each champion of their weight class will receive a championship belt and a gold medal.  The runners-up will receive a silver medal and losers in the semi-finals will receive a bronze medal.  The medals contain our new logo and really look nice.  There will also be special awards for Outstanding Boxer and Outstanding Sportsmanship of the tournament.

Additionally, we will present the annual special awards to the Official of the Year, Coach of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Boxer of the Year.

You are only as good as your word

Why do people sign up to box and then back out? When a person signs up to box, they are giving their word that they will do so. I am not talking about emergency situations, work problems, etc. I am talking about people that sign up to box and then something else comes along that they would rather do. I am talking about people that have decided they would rather box somewhere else at a later date. I am talking about people that don't even have the courage to tell me they are not going to show up or lie about the reason they can't box. I am also talking about the people that don't have any intention of boxing when they sign up...they get some type of weird joy out doing this. Remember one thing young men and young women...you are only as good as your word. If you develop a habit of being unreliable, it will be the difference between being a success or a failure throughout life. The choice is yours.

These people are jeopardizing the amateur boxing program because these events are very expensive, especially at the Charleston Civic Center.  I need to know how many night to rent the venue.  The fans feel cheated if I do not give them what has been advertised.  I have to rely on your word.  So, when I rent a building, it is based on the number of entries I have.  When people read this website and see you name on the list of entries, they buy tickets expecting to see you box.  I am trying to keep the amateur program in West Virginia alive for those that want to box.  So for you people that really do not care about boxing, please do not sign up to box in the future.  In the case of many of you who have signed up to box in the past and present and not bothered to show up or even notify me, your word is no longer good with me.

Lincoln County Students

LINCOLN COUNTY STUDENTS: Last year you won the team championship in our championship boxing tournament. You were all so very proud on the night of the finals when you upset the defending champions who attended Riverside High. Then you were disappointed when the school principal at that time would not allow you to display the trophy in the school trophy case. Since boxing is not a school sport.  I am not surprised at that action, although, I do not see the harm it would have done. You were further disappointed in January 2012 when the Board of Education rejected my request to hold an event in your school so you could demonstrate your skills in front of your hometown. I was also disappointed but I am not quitting.  I am more determined  than ever to find a place in Lincoln County for you to box even if it has to be in a farm field.  To date, not a single Lincoln County boxer has signed up to box March 2 & 3. Quitting is not the solution to disappointment and adversity! By quitting, you are simply giving up. I am asking you guys to defend your team title and show the "adults" that you are not quitters. Show them that you are young responsible adults and that you will be voting someday. The decision is yours to make and always be proud of what you accomplished last year!
