9 at the Old Clendenin Middle in Clendenin, WV. We enjoyed our four years at the Charleston Civic Center but there just aren't enough fans to pay for the expenses of the event. Clendenin is a good location, just a few mile off of the interstate and draws more fans than we get at the Charleston Civic Center. HHB is excited about holding the event at the Old Clendenin Middle School. We will have more on this later. We are also looking for small venues in other locations for other events.

HOMETOWN HEROES BOXING CHALLENGE CHAMPIONS must be willing to defend their championship belt or the championship will be vacated. Some champions seem to be of the opinion they can win a belt and retain it without defending it. This is amateur boxing and it is about competing and becoming the very best boxer you can be. The challenge championship was not designed to be like professional boxing where people are always ducking each other...it was designed to stimulate boxing. We do not have a lot of events in West Virginia as compared to a lot of other states, so you should box every chance you get!

The Charleston Convention and Visitors' Bureau will hold a press conference announcing Charleston, WV as the site of the over the next three years. They have worked very hard to secure this major event and I thank them! I have gone through a lot of levels in amateur boxing from a boxer in 1958 to national president of USA Boxing from 1996 to 2000, including the team leader for boxing in the 2000 Olympic in Sydney, Australia , but, I must say this is one of my prouder moments! The evening produced some of the greatest seen in West Virginia in a number of years. The championship bouts alone could have been a . There were several new boxers participating for the first time that showed a lot of promise for the future. AMATEUR BOXING IN WEST VIRGINIA IS BACK! I judge the success of our from the enthusiasm of the boxers, coaches and officials and not the number of fans in attendance, although the number of fans seemed to be up somewhat. We had 22 bouts which is a little much for one evening but the guys wanted to box...so what do you do other than match them and let them box! I will update the Hometown Heroes Boxing website this week with the results, boxers rankings and some comments. In memory of Tyler Hatfield...
I left the following message on Tyler Hatfield's facebook page on Saturday. He died in an automobile accident on his way to school last week and his funeral was on Friday. I am asking my facebook friends to go to Tyler Hatfield's page and leave a message for his family and friends. There have been thousands of posts to his page...this young man brought the southern coalfields together in a showing of love and support for him and his family. Please leave a post.
I never knew you Tyler Hatfield, however, I do know some of your friends through our Hometown Heroes Boxing program. I have followed the many posts by your friends and family since that terrible morning a few days ago. Tyler, you have brought the community of Gilbert and Mingo County together in a bond that will never be broken. There have been hundreds of heartfelt posting and expressions of love by your friends and family, young and old, and even people that did not know you. Your pictures reflect a perpetual smile on your face that will never be forgotten. One of your friends, Travis Ray Salmons, asked me to write something about you on our website and I will honor his request and it will be posted on www.hometownheroesboxing.us. Although you have departed at such a young age, your memory and that smile of yours will live on. I wish I could have know you Tyler. You are truly a Hometown Hero...Rest In Peace young man!

The Welch Hometown Heroes Boxing Championships scheduled for Jan. 14 are being cancelled due to a lack of sufficient entries.  We cannot afford to wait any longer on students/boxers to enter the event.  We have already lost money that can't be recovered in trying to bring this event to your community.  We greatly regret this action but if the students at Mount View and River View do not want to participate, we have no choice other than to take this action.  The January 28 event at Baileysville will take place as scheduled.  (1/4/2012)
.
Students/boxers in the southern coalfields of West Virginia are needed to box on Jan. 14 at the Welch Armory.  You will be matched based on your age, weight and experience level.  For example, if you do not have any experience we will try to match you against someone without experienc.  We may ask you to box someone with one or two bouts if an opponent is not available but you have the right to reject any bout.  No one can force you to box.  We have plenty of nice awards for all participants.  If you want to box, please go to the Welch sign up page and complete the form.  It is our sincere hope that there will be enough interest in the Welch area to start a boxing club.  Thank you!

Hometown Heroes Boxing™ territories available in your state.  Contact Gary E. Toney at (304) 768-3614 or gary.toney@suddenlink.net for information.  We want to make this a national program for the grassroots boxers and your help is needed.
Challenge Championship rankings are listed on the "Challenge Championship" page.  We have compiled these rankings to stimulate interest among the boxers and fans.  The rankings are subjective but we did them based on your recent record along with the level of your competition.  Boxers who have been inactive recently were not considered.  We will revise the rankings after each competition.  Hosts of events other than Hometown Heroes Boxing must forward results to me immediately after their events in order for them to be considered for ranking purposes.  Hometown Heroes Challenge Championship bouts will only be held on Hometown Heroes Boxing events.
Amateur boxers need to know that participation in Toughman, Rough N Rowdy, and similar types of competition will result in you losing your amateur status.  Please protect your amateur status.  This is to make you aware of USA Boxing's rule on this matter.  You obviously can make your own choice.  Also, for those of you that have contacted me about reinstatement, I am currently working with USA Boxing to get you reinstated as amateurs.  Please do not let me down.
You can access the Hometown Heroes Boxing™ website with the following address: www.hometownheroesboxing.us or you may still use hooksforbooksboxing.org for the time being if you wish.
2012 Membership registration opens December 1, 2011.
Current USA Boxing members will be able to renew their 2012 registration beginning December 1, 2011. Registration may be accomplished via the USA Boxing website (www.usaboxing.org) or through the Local Boxing Committee (LBC).
Athletes and non-athletes are encouraged to renew before January 2012 so there is no lapse in membership and they are ready to participate in early year events. With the USA Boxing National Championships taking place in March, many LBC and Regional tournaments will be held earlier.
Additionally, all first-time members to USA Boxing can join beginning in December and their membership will be valid through 2012. This benefit is available by registering online or through the LBC.  Reprinted from USA Boxing's website.
Hometown Heroes Boxing™ will accept all boxers...middle school, high school, college and out of school.  Minimum age is 13 and no limit on number of bouts you may have.  We do not exclude anyone qualified as an amateur under USA Boxing rules age 13 and over.  Also, there is no limit on the number of bouts you may have in our program.
All boxers who have won HFB Boxing Challenge Championships will be recognized as challenge champions in the new organization Hometown Heroes Boxing.™
Our name has changed to "Hometown Heroes Boxing."  This is a new organization and we will have much more on it  soon.  We are no longer affiliated with Hooks for Books.  Please continue using www.hooksforbooksboxing.org to access the website for now.
HFBB Rocks the Charleston Civic Center...full results are posted on the "News and Results" page.
Thank you Doug Pauley for your sponsorship of Hooks for Books Boxing for the upcoming year.  Your generosity to amateur boxing is unmatched.  However, we still need sponsors folks if our program is to survive.  This is a great program for the youth but I need more financial help.  I simply cannot continue to carry most of the financial burden as many of our events are still losing money.
Attention Boxers:  You will not be considered for future events if you are officially matched and do not show up for the Oct. 15 event at the  Charleston Civic Center without a legitimate written excuse.  This hurts the amateur program in West Virginia.  It is unfair to the other boxers and the paying fans.  If you have decided not to box after signing-up, please send me an email at gary.toney@hooksforbooksboxing.org stating that you wish  to withdraw from the event before you are officially matched.  You must do this no later than seven (7) days before the event.  Thank you for your cooperation in this matter!

The Charleston Hooks for Books Boxing event Saturday, April 16 produced nineteen
exciting boxing matches before a low turnout of fans.  The event was opened by local country music singer Lindsey Paul who treated the fans to thirty minutes of great singing.  Look for this young lady to go places in country music.  She also sang the national anthem.  The complete results will be posted along with the results from the Williamson event within a couple of  days.
Female Boxers:  Under the West Virginia Athletic Commission Rules, all females, regardless of age, must have a pregnancy test no more than 14 days prior to the date they compete or they may take the test on the date of competition under the supervision of medical personnel at the event.  Although this is not a USA Boxing rule, we must comply with this state regulation because the commission saw fit to include amateur boxing.  Therefore, if you have had a pregnancy test within the past 14 days, you must provide us with the results of the test.  If you have not tested, please bring a test kit with you so you may test under the supervision of the attending physician.  I apologize for this inconvenience and intrusion.
It was an exciting night of Hooks for Books Boxing before a very light turnout of fans at the Williamson Field House.  The main event between Nathaniel Mounts of Burch High and Nick Hunt of Riverside High lived up to it's billing.  Easily the most exciting bout of the night.  It was give and take by both boxers as they went three 2 minutes rounds for the WV Hooks for Books Challenge Championship belt in the featherweight class.  In the end, the judges scored it for Hunt in an extremely close match.  In the co-main even, Heath  Cline of Westside High won the WV Hooks for Books Middleweight Championship over fellow team mate Josh Blankenship of Westside High in a technical boxing match.  Cline stopped Blakenship in the 2nd round.  The complete results of the bouts will be posted later on the News & Results page.
Pictures from the West Virginia Hooks for Books Boxing Feb. 11 & 12 at the Charleston Civic Center may be ordered online at www.johnrice.fotki.com/boxing.  If you have problems with the web site you may call Mr. John Rice at (304) 488-6314. Clothing and equipment you need to bring to Hooks for Books Boxing events. Gym shorts, sleeveless athletic shirt (tank top), shoes (tennis, basketball or similar shoes), socks, towel, mouthpiece, protective cup (jock strap with cup). Don't forget your birth certificate, two passport size pictures (headshot) and a parent to sign the USA Boxing registration form.
